Google Base Feed Changes On September 22

A lot of merchants are worried about the Google Base feed changes that are being enforced starting today. If you are not aware of these changes then please check out the Google Merchant Center which has all the details that you need.

Basically, if you are running Interspire Shopping Cart (ISC 6.x) and sell non-apparel goods to the US, UK, Germany or France then you only need to add the availability attribute, as the image_link attribute is already being supplied by the Google Base feed generator. The same goes for BigCommerce running on version 6.x.

If you are running ISC 6.x or BigCommerce 6.x and you do sell apparel goods to US, UK, Germany, France and Japan then you will also need to add the Google Product Category attribute along with the variant attributes which are: color, size, material and pattern.

Note: the Google Product Category attribute has to be added for the following categories of products:

  • Apparel & Accessories > Clothing
  • Apparel & Accessories > Shoes
  • Apparel & Accessories
  • Media > Books
  • Media > DVDs & Movies
  • Media > Music
  • Software > Video Game Software

For most merchants, the only change is to add the availability attribute which should get the Google feed working once again. For those selling apparel items (or media such as music, DVDs, books and video games) the GPC (Google Product Category) attribute will need to be added as well.

Happy listing!
